Regulation (EC) 258/97 provides the legal framework for risk assessment of novel foods in the EU. However, detailed protocols for this risk assessment still need to be developed. Bringing together an inter-disciplinary team of researchers from 10 countries, NOFORISK is a joint effort to fill this gap.

NOFORISK will develop and validate new methodologies for assessing the safety, nutritional properties and efficacy for health promotion of different types of second generation novel foods.

The paradigmatic examples will include:

  • a genetically modified potato
  • conventionally bred rice
  • two functional food ingredients

A consumer part will complete the project and a combination of:

  • interview studies
  • surveys
  • experiments

will evaluate whether the combined assessment of risk and benefit will sufficiently address public concern with regard to the second generation of novel foods, formulate ways how to best communicate the results to the public, and communicate the results of the project in an integrated way to the wider stakeholder audience.
